A geometric examination of Kemeny's rule

چکیده

By using geometry, a fairly complete analysis of Kemeny’s rule (KR) is obtained. It is shown that the Borda Count (BC) always ranks the KR winner above the KR loser, and, conversely, KR always ranks the BC winner above the BC loser. Such KR relationships fail to hold for other positional methods. The geometric reasons why KR enjoys remarkably consistent election rankings as candidates are added or dropped are explained. The power of this KR consistency is demonstrated by comparing KR and BC outcomes. But as also shown, KR’s consistency carries a heavy cost; it requires KR to partially dismiss the crucial “individual rationality of voters” assumption. Finally, KR manipulative and related properties are geometrically characterized.

Kemeny's rule and Slater's rule: A binary comparison

The purpose of this paper is to provide a binary comparison of two distance−based preference aggregation rules, Slater’s rule and Kemeny’s rule. It will be shown that for certain lists of individual preferences the outcomes will be antagonistic in the sense that what is considered best according to one rule is considered worst according to the other rule. I am grateful to Daniel Eckert, Nick Ba...

Explaining All Three-Alternative Voting Outcomes

A theory is developed to explain all possible three-alternative (single-profile) pairwise and positional voting outcomes. This includes all preference aggregation paradoxes, cycles, conflict between the Borda and Condorcet winners, differences among positional outcomes (e.g., the plurality and antiplurality methods), and differences among procedures using these outcomes (e.g., runoffs, Kemeny's...

Ehsan Rule and the effects on it in terms of compensatory and non-compensatory liabilities are of great importance; to the extent that it independently and initially revokes the liability based on a famous view among jurists and Jurisprudents. Based on the mentioned-view, in order to trigger Ehsan Rule and termination of liability, intentional and actual benefaction should necessarily exist. De...

Kemeny's Constant and the Random Surfer

We revisit Kemeny’s constant in the context of Web navigation, also known as “surfing”. We derive bounds on the constant and give it a novel interpretation in terms of the number of links a random surfer will follow to reach his final destination.

The Impacts of Monetary Policy on Macroeconomic Variables Assuming the Collateral Constraint

This study aimed to examine the effects of monetary policy on macroeconomic variables with regard to the collateral constraint. For this purpose, a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) was developed for Iran’s economic status. Two scenarios were considered as to account for the behavior of the central bank. In the first scenario, the monetary rule is modeled according to the GDP gap an...
